Two fence structures consisting of individual elements and joined together invisbly. The tubular steel pipes are supports for the lettering and designed like a line of music (the eternal song...).
DO NOT (part I) can be entered through a fixed, open gate and the sentence:
DO NOT COVET YOUR NBGHBOURS GARDEN can only be read from the inside.
STAY (part II) is a massive square in space that cannot be entered. As a contrast to the soft bast
lettering of part I, we read here:
STAY WHERE YOU ARE
in highly polished steel, running all round.
The sentences are to be understood both as commandments (to another person) and as protected space (for the viewer).
The fence, as a repratedly recurring symbol of exclusion and demarcation (visible/invisible - political/psychological) becomes a field of action for the viewer, superficially harmless here, who stands in relation to it form any specific location in/in front of/next to the work.
The viewer defines his or her standpoint by a personal interpretation.
